Lazy Lizard Crafts - back on the Craft trail in time for the Festive Season!

Hi everyone - I've not posted for quite some time as I took a step back from crafting for a while, to focus my energies on getting out and about during the Spring and Summer.

I've started back now though; and am busy sewing and sawing and soldering to produce some lovely new pieces for my next Craft event which is in November 2013.

I've also booked up some events for 2014, so hope to see you in Edinburgh and beyond, in the not too distant future!

Bye for now

How much do you feel your work is worth? the eternal dilemma of pricing

Hi everyone

I spent last weekend in Newcastle, braving the bitter cold and the wind. While I was there, I visited Tynemouth Market, which is held in the Tynemouth railway station. Quite a few crafters have started selling their work at the market and there was some beautiful work on sale. In particular, there was a stall selling painted glassware, in the form of tealight holders, vases and other decorative glass pieces, with themes such as butterflies; peacocks; leaves; and seaside scenes. The artist is Carol Nicholson and her website is:  www.artstudioofglass.com Have a look at her work, it is lovely.

There were a few stalls exhibiting textile work such as handmade tote bags and handbags. I was concerned to see that the average price for a fully lined tote bag was around £5.00. Surely this low price cannot cover costs for materials and production time, let alone overheads such as stall costs, transport, insurance etc. It is sad that people do not feel able to charge a reasonable price for their handcrafted pieces.

So, my question is...  do you think that crafters should price their work at a rate that takes into account costings for materials, overheads and their time, then add in a percentage uplift; thereby taking a gamble on whether or not the customer is willing to pay this amount? or should they price their pieces at a price that they think the customer will pay, event though that may not allow any percentage for overheads or time spent making the piece?

I'm not sure - what do you think?

Cheers

Hi everyone

Wow. It is a long time since I last posted a blog! I've been busy working on some new products such as my cute felt dog brooches, quilted tote bags and shoppers, felt phone covers, kindle covers, wirework necklaces and hammered silver earrings. I hope to upload lots of new items over the next few days.

My next event is on 24th November when I will be exhibiting at a craft fair in Bonnyrigg. I'll post more details soon.

Lazy Lizard at Peebles Agricultural Show - 11th August 2012

Hi everyone

The weather was gorgeous for the Peebles Agricultural Show and the crowds were out in force. There were lots of visitors to Lazy Lizard Craft stall with particular interest in the textile work, including phone covers and kindle covers. It was a really nice day, with lots to see, when I managed to escape from behind the stall.

I've picked up some new events/venues to sell my craftwork and will keep you posted as to where I will be exhibiting next.

Just received: some exciting new fabrics....

Hi everyone

I've just received a huge bundle of wonderful fabrics and trimmings, from someone who is having a sort out, prior to putting her house on the market. There are all sorts of different textures, from tapestry to chenille to velvet and taffeta. I'm looking forward to sketching out some new designs in time for my next event, on May 5th at Morningside Makers Market.

Bumper Sales at Charity Event!

Hi everyone

Myself and other University Staff, took part in the first
University of Edinburgh Charity Christmas Craft Fair, from 12-14.00 on 9th December 2011. The fair was on the fifth floor of Teviot House, so I must admit I didn't expect there to be many people coming to see our craftwork. How wrong was I!

The event was well attended and I made really good sales. The handbags and purses were very popular and I could have sold more, had I had the time to make them. My stall was a looking bit bare after a while.
Sterling silver is still moving quite slowly, but I sold many pieces of wire work and beaded gemstone jewellery.

[If people were at the event and are interested in purchasing a bag, please feel free to contact me via my contact page on this website. For examples of the type of bags I make, please go to the handbags page on the site].

All in all, it was a fantastic end to my crafting year and I'd like to thank the organisers and everyone who came along to support the event.

My next event is not until February 2012.  In the interim, I will still be crafting: just not taking part in events for the next few weeks. Don't forget to check back to see new stock, and please feel free to contact me if you would like me to make you a bag/purse or some jewellery.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

Christmas is coming!

Hi there

I'm still in production mode, finishing off some orders I have for handbags and jewellery.

My next event is Morningside Makers Market, on Saturday, 3rd December 2011. Check my upcoming events page for more details.

If you have been unable to come along to any of the events I've been exhibiting at recently, there is still an opportunity to buy online.
Over this and next week, I'll be adding more stock to my online shop, in the form of bags, purses and accessories as well as jewellery.

Get in touch via the contact page on my website. If you mention my blog in your contact then I will offer free postage on any orders received by 14th December 2011.

Happy shopping ( I can say that as I have almost finished my Christmas shopping - thanks to Amazon).

Best wishes

Whew! I've had a busy couple of weeks. I had an excellent Day at the Midlothian Crafters event on 29th October in Bonnyrigg, where I was selling handbags and jewellery. I sold quite a number of pieces, including a pink plaid bag and a brown plaid three- section bag. This left me with a bit of a problem though - I was a bit short of handbags!

I knew I had another two events on 5th and 6th November, so I set to work and produced a funky 'Graffitti' bag in white and black/grey fabric with a bright red lining and a zipped top. I also made two purses, one in a green boiled wool fabric and one in a hot pink plaid fabric.

At The November Morningside Makers Market on 5th November, I found time to swap all my labelling for my new Lazy Lizard Crafts labels. I am very pleased with the result.

On Sunday, I travelled to Perth, to take part in the Handmade Show. I had a fantastic day and again sold lots of bags, including my new green wool one; a green slub tote bag and quite a few felt totes. My silver and beaded jewellery was a big hit too. Although I was tired at the end of the weekend, it was worth it for the amount of exposure my crafts received.

I'll be very busy this making more stock this week. Indeed, I've started work already on a grey/white/black plaid handbag in a similar style to the pink plaid and the green wool one I recently added to my website. Unfortunately (or fortunately) as fast as I make these bags they sell, so they are not around on my website for very long.

Must go and get on with making - I hope to see you at my next event which is a Christmas Shopping Evening, on 18th November 2011, from 7.00pm - 9.00pm at St Thomas Church, 75-79 Glasgow Road, Edinburgh EH12 8LJ

Hi Everyone

I've had really good sales on my bags and purses recently, so I'm in full production mode, to have more stock in time for my next craft event at the end of this month (29th October 2011, in Bonnyrigg, Midlothian).

I've been working with some really nice boiled wool fabric in jewel colours, as well as a vibrant pink, green and orange plaid fabric in a slubby texture. I just love textured fabric, be it boucle, cord, chenille or knitted :-)

I'll be making some other accessories and of course, jewellery in time for the show, so hope to see you there.

Lazy Lizard Crafts at October Morningside Makers Market

Lazy Lizard Crafts had another excellent day on Saturday, at Morningside Makers Market.  Although the market was not as busy as last month, I achieved good sales and had a most enjoyable day.

I 'd brought along a fair amount of new pieces, including a chunky Rock Crystal and Onyx Necklace and Earring Set; another Rock Crystal Set, interspersed with lovely, petrol toned freshwater pearls; and an Onyx and Haematite Pendant and Earring set.

I had also expanded my coin purse selection to include purses in tweed, tartan and cotton fabrics.

Some of the new pieces are now sold, but I will be posting the remainder of the pieces (and hopefully some new ones) onto the Lazy Lizard Crafts website during the coming week.

Watch this space!

September Morningside Makers Market

Wow! I had a really excellent day at the Morningside Makers Market yesterday.  There was a lot of interest in my jewellery, as well as my handbags and purses. Although business was brisk, there was still time to chat to customers and other stall holders.
I was really pleased when someone who had bought one of my necklace sets last year stopped by to tell me how much she loves the set and how her friends wanted to know where they could buy one. I'll be making one or two similar (but not the same) sets in time to take to Morningside at the beginning of October.
When Marcia Lanyon (gemstone dealer) was in Edinburgh earlier in the year, I bought a string of stick pearls in a hot pink colour. I teamed them with fresh green pearls and silver to make a necklace and earring set, as well as a bracelet. They were  much admired at the Peebles Agricultural Show, but I left the show without having sold them. The necklace set and the bracelet were both snapped up at Morningside which really made my day.
I also sold lots of cards, accessories, girls bracelets and other items of jewellery. It is so nice to see that people like your craftwork enough to buy it. Especially when there is such a lot of competition around in the Craft Market.
Hope to see everyone again at the next Makers Market on the first Saturday in October.
:-)

Lazy Lizard Crafts at Biggar Agricultural Show

Once again the weather was kind to us when we went to Biggar Agricultural Show. We had an excellent pitch, against the side of the craft marquee, rather than in the middle :-)

The craft tent was busy and the day passed quickly. Despite the recession, there was lots of interest in the handmade handbags and purses on my stall. The silverwork and beaded jewellery was also very popular and we had good sales in both bags and jewellery. We handed out a fair number of business cards to highlight our website and online shop.

Haddington Agricultural Show 2011

Lazy Lizard Crafts took part in the Haddington Show on Saturday 2nd July. The weather was kind to us and certainly drew in the crowds. A good number of people visited the Craft Marquee: admiring the work on display. Unfortunately, the recession is still biting and sales were slow.
Despite the slow sales, I had a good day out and enjoyed the event. Here's hoping for good weather for the Biggar Show on 23rd July :-)
I'll be adding new stock to the Lazy Lizard Crafts online shop later this week, so please visit soon to see what's on offer!

Getting ready for holidays!

Having a break from craft fairs for a couple of weeks as I travel to France, for a tour around Brittany and Normandy. I hope to pick up some ideas for funky jewellery and handbags while I'm out and about!
I've been working in copper sheet and in sterling silver wire recently, as silver is just so expensive. I'll be exhibiting some of my new designs at my next event which is the Haddington Show on 2nd July.
See my events page for further details...
